That another place could surpass the undisturbed, rugged beauty of Big Sur's McWay Falls is nearly impossible, I thought to myself as we wound our way up Highway 1 towards the elusive purple sands of Pfeiffer Beach.
We were celebrating our three-year wedding anniversary with a 10-day road trip up the coast of California.
Having spent the earlier part of the day making our way up the wounding cliffside of Big Sur, then lounging around Nepenthe – first cozied up by the fire pit in the middle of the restaurant, watching the thunderstorms roll in over the majestic cliffs, then, once the sun came out, in an intimate corner booth – I couldn't possibly dream of a more perfect day.
Hidden behind a dense forrest of massive Redwoods, Pfeiffer Beach is not noticeable from the road; in fact, unless you are familiar with the two-mile unpaved road that will lead you to this secret paradise, you could miss it altogether, which would be a total shame because this was by far one of the most magical spots along our entire road trip.
The day being Tuesday before Thanksgiving – our anniversary is November 24 – the parking lot at the end of the unpaved road was nearly empty, and after paying the $10 entrance fee, we began making our way through the dense forrest towards the sound of the breaking waves, almost immediately emerging onto a clearing with large boulders looming right in front of us and and the last bit of sunlight peeking through the sea caves, carved into the granite boulders by years and years of tumultuous waves.
One can't help but stand gazing in awe for a few moments.
Here's a glimpse of Pfeiffer Beach; I'll let you decide for yourself.
Have you ever been to Big Sur? How did you feel about Pfeiffer Beach? Which stop on our California road trip would you like to see next? Got any exciting trips of your own coming up?
