Must Have Hair Products

Let’s be honest. Whether she realizes it or not, every woman faces a daily struggle of not basing her self-confidence and self-worth on physical appearance. Sure, in theory we all claim to value and appreciate natural beauty, but go one day without properly fixing your hair {known in more intimate circles as that tangled, damaged mess atop your head}, and you will experience first-hand just how appreciated your natural beauty is. {Click here to read more of my musings on society’s unhealthy obsession with beauty.

So where is that fine line between looking your best and spending endless hours and resources on washing, coloring, conditioning, drying, brushing, braiding, spraying, moisturizing and shaping your hair into submission?

Frankly, that’s for you to decide.

But I will tell you what I know for sure, which is that every woman wants gorgeous hair without spending an hour on it every morning. Because, let’s face it, we all have a fascinating, beautiful life to live.

That is why, being the nice friend that I am, I’m sharing my list of must have hair products with you – not in an effort to add more steps to what I assume is already an extensive beauty routine, but on the contrary, to save you time and money – resources that can otherwise be invested into far more meaningful places. By simplifying your beauty routine, you can reclaim valuable time normally spent slaving away in the bathroom every morning.

So, without further ado, behold my all-time favorite must have hair products.

Swanson 100% Certified Organic Coconut Oil, $8.49 – Coconut oil is the only conditioner you will ever need. Slather this baby on your roots for 30 minutes before a shower, cover with a shower cap, and enjoy luscious {and delicious-smelling} locks after the shower. Sign up for an account on Swason and receive 10% off your order. You can also leave your email address in the comment section below {or email it to me, if you’re wary of posting such personal info}, and I will send you an additional coupon! {Please note I am in no way compensated by Swanson. I simply love their products!}

Nioxin Smoothing Reflectives Glossing Color Shield, $15.40 – If you’re a fan of the hair dryer, straightener or curling iron, this item is for you. Just like the name suggests, it’s perfect for color-treated hair and seems to magically seal split ends without leaving your hair greasy.

pssst! Instant Spray Shampoo, $5.19 – If you have yet to try dry shampoo, you are missing out! The only reason I don’t have to wash my hair every day is because of this little can of magic. Just think of all that you could do with the time you spend washing, conditioning and drying your hair!

Herbal Essence Body Envy Volumizing Mousse, $3.99 – I’ve tried a bevy of mousses in my lifetime, and this has been my favorite to-date. It’s everything it claims to be – weightless, delicious-smelling, volume boosting. And for less than a cup of coffee, I’d say it’s a real money-saver.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, $5.99 – Infused with natural dead sea salt and sea kelp, this spray will give you that perfectly tousled texture in half the time it’ll take you to pronounce its name. Plus, it smells like a beautiful day at the beach.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product, $29.39 – Yes, the price tag may be a bit of a shock in comparison to the other products on the list, but if you only knew how versatile this cream is, you’d forgo the other six and just use this. It repairs damaged hair, adds shine, detangles, controls frizz, seals hair color, prevents split ends and hair breakage, smoothes, enhances natural body, and protects against heat styling tools. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it’s not! Seriously, if I had to use only one hair product for the rest of my life {aside from shampoo}, it would be this miracle-in-a-bottle.

Scruples Silk Control Blow Dry Elixir, $14.99 – If $30 bucks for the Miracle Leave-In Product is a bit much for your budget, this cream is a great alternative. The lightweight formula gives you both volume, smoothness {is that even a word?} and shine, and, of course, protects your locks from heat styling tools.

  1. I love your blog, Oksana. I just discovered it today and can’t stop reading. I only wish that your articles were longer. I’d love to hear more of your thoughts!

My hair is long (a little past my bra band), thick, and coarse. Kind of frizzy too. I used to be SUPER low maintenance with my hair- read shampoo and conditioner only, maybe the occasional detangler spray. But I’ve discovered how wonderfully my hair responds to products, as long as they don’t have lots of silicones.

My current hair product can’t-live-withouts are:

    1. Shea Moisture conditioner (any of their range).
    2. Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It (because I air dry my hair).
    3. Bumble and bumble Pret-a-powder (my perfect dry shampoo/volumizer/deodorizer).

My current hair product must-haves-but-can-live-without are:
    1. Dermorganic shampoo
    2. Shea Moisture (long hair) conditioner
    3. Shea Moisture (long hair) leave-in conditioner
    4. Shea Moisture (long hair) masque
    5. Living Proof Root Lifting Spray
    6. Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla leave-in conditioner (use as a hair perfume).
    7. Bumble and bumble The Tonic
    8. Phyto 9
    9. Creation’s Garden Argan Oil (mixed with a little rosemary essential oil).
    10. It’s a 10 spray leave-in
    11. Aveda sun-care spray (keeps my hair from being damaged by the sun).

  2. Love your suggestions! I’m definitely going to try the Coconut Oil one! I’ve been obsessed with 21 from Pureology – it’s AMAZING! There are 21 benefits to the product but my favorites are: leave in conditionor/detangler, color productant, softness and the smell is super yummy. Give it a whirl, girl and let me know what you think!!

    • Oh, I’ve heard so many positive things about Pureology – definitely need to try it! Another great line I forgot to add is Kenra – specifically the Kenra Platinum Hot Spray. It protects your hair from styling tools and holds the style in shape so much better than hair spray! When I’m curling my hair, I separate it into sections, then one by one I spray each section and curl. The lasting power is ridiculous!
